Yohanna Romero Baca, Senior Attorney
Yohanna Romero Baca is a Senior Attorney at Garza & Associates. Her experience with immigration laws and the immigration system spans over a lifetime. As a child growing up in Nicaragua, Ms. Romero Baca’s family moved to Costa Rica to escape the violent uprising during the Nicaraguan Revolution, and eventually settled in Honduras. In 1993, Ms. Romero Baca obtained a student visa to pursue her education in the United States, and successfully navigated the immigration system, eventually becoming an U.S. citizen. Having been through the immigration process herself, Ms. Romero Baca is uniquely aware of the complexities of immigration law, as she underwent the path from an F-1 student visa, H-1B visa for specialty occupations, an employment sponsored Labor Certification, to obtaining her green card through an I-140 employment petition, and eventually naturalizing to U.S. citizenship. Ms. Romero Baca’s real-life experience makes her qualified to untangle the legal and bureaucratic red tape that keeps so many families separated.
She strives to reunite families one case at a time, as she takes on the difficult task of preparing I-601 and I-601A waivers to overcome the harsh bars for unlawful presence, fraud, and prior criminal activity. Ms. Romero Baca has successfully obtained approvals in cases involving some of the most difficult issues in immigration waiver law. Thanks to her zealous and passionate representation, USCIS has also approved numerous I-212 waivers filed by Ms. Romero Baca that allowed people who were previously deported to return to the United States legally. Ms. Romero Baca is a compassionate and dedicated attorney with extensive knowledge of both family and employment immigration. She is also well-versed in VAWA petitions for domestic violence survivors and their children. She also works on affirmative asylum applications for our clients from around the world.
Prior to joining Garza & Associates, Ms. Romero Baca worked for nine years at the international law firm of Patton Boggs, LLP in Washington, DC. Ms. Romero Baca worked in the firm’s employment based immigration practice, handling cases for large corporate clients. Ms. Romero Baca is a graduate of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science with a minor in International Relations. She received her law degree from The George Washington University School of Law in 2005. Ms. Romero Baca is licensed to practice law by the State Bar of Maryland (2006), the State Bar of Florida (2008), and the State Bar of Texas (2010).
In addition to the fulfilling work Ms. Romero Baca does as an attorney, she has made Houston her adopted home, where she lives with her husband, who emigrated from Honduras, their son, and their dog. Ms. Romero Baca takes pride in raising a culturally diverse Texan/Honduran/Nicaraguan son who keeps her active and young.
